Great Printer, Excellent Value July 2, 2008 Christopher Ireland (Sacramento, CA) 25 out of 27 found this review helpful
Pros: Very fast print speed, auto document feeder, quiet, works great with Mac OSX Leopard, Vista compatible, separate (and cost effective) drum and toner cartridges, low price.
Cons: None, especially at this price.
I have this printer connected to my Apple Airport Extreme Gigabit base station and it works like a charm for printing from all of my Windows and Mac machines. Brother has made it extremely easy to install the drivers (and they've even already updated themselves on the Mac), so the entire setup was under 5 minutes. I love the fact that I can also use this printer as a standalone photocopier--and cheaply since it's a laser printer. Of course, network scanning would be a plus, but that's not the printer's fault. If I need to scan docs or pictures (rarely would I) then I can just connect it directly to my Mac and use it from there. But 99.9% of the time, I just print documents over the network and make photocopies. Great printer!
Incredible Bargain January 2, 2009 Grant R. Gulovsen (Galesburg, IL United States) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Printer arrived today. Setup in less than 15 minutes. B&W print & copy quality is outstanding. Envelopes feed smoothly and print much better than my old Samsung SCX-4100 (which this printer replaced). For this price, the number of features and level of quality justifies five stars. Cannot say enough good things about this MFP. Make sure to get it with the auto document feeder.
In response to one of the other reviewers, I typically purchase OEM toners anyway, so the fact that this machine may not accept knock-off toner cartridges does not bother me (and certainly does not seem like a legitimate reason by itself to give this excellent machine only one star).
A Must Have Copier December 30, 2009 PJToday (California, Bay Area) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is my second Brother DCP copier. No complaints. All functions are perfect with my Mac. First copier lasted 4 years. I learned that cleaning the rollers makes for longer lasting life with this machine. But then I need cleaning too for better performance. Those little paper dusts make the sensors go off and you will go nuts with the message"clean the drum or back door is open" if paper dust remains inside. All said, I probably got a year longer from the first DCP due to maintaining as per booklet. I expect same from this one. The IMAGES ARE BEAUTIFUL. This is the honeymoon . I will keep you posted if any nasties happen. But then Brother's customer service has been tops with correct and pleasant help when needed. Now if only this machine could talk. Keep in mind that it is the 7040 series that is very compatible with the Mac. Happy copies.P.J.Today
How can they produce such an awesome machine at this price? January 29, 2010 PsychDoc (NYC) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
So my ~10 year old Xerox copy machine started consistently eating paper. I toyed with the idea of having it repaired until I realized that it would doubtless have cost me more than a brand new machine would cost. And the new machine would be able to do more at a lower cost. Keep in mind that this old Xerox had cost me about $600 10 years ago. So after a great deal of online research I decided that this unit was the way to go. I can't say enough about this wonderful little machine. Let me list some of it's wonderful attributes.
*It's quite small and doesn't require a lot of real estate.
*It's remarkably quiet, even when printing.
*Great sleep feature that allows you to leave it on 24/7.
*Flawless paper handling from the automatic document feeder and paper supply.
*Generous 250 sheet paper supply capacity.
*Amazing print quality...razor sharp.
*Fast little devil (33ppm IIRC).
*Option to sort of stack multiple page copies done thru the document feeder (i.e. 111,222,333 or 123, 123, 123).
*Prints come right out of the front of the machine...no bulky arm on the side required to "catch" prints.
*Attractive aesthetically....fits in beautifully in my office.
*Unbelievably economical...I got mine for $129 (sorry Amazon)...toner cartridges reasonably priced.
If there's one negative, it's the LCD display. It's not big enough and it should be backlighted. I would also have liked dedicated buttons for a few of the enlarge/reduce settings. That way you wouldn't have to scroll through the available options by continually pushing the "enlarge/reduce" button until you find the one you're looking for.
So, other than these admittedly picky quibbles, I'd say what you have here is a virtually perfect machine for light to moderate copy duty.
Great functionality and flexibility July 9, 2009 N. Gowen (Little Rock, AR) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This printer has done everything it promised very well.
Startup: very fast from sleep mode. I timed the first page out at about 19 seconds after I hit the print button. To my surprise it actually wakes up pretty fast from being turned all the way off (switch on the righthand side). The time from being switched on to first page out (had print jobs waiting) was 33 seconds.
Printing: fast with good quality. Makes about as much noise as you would expect, certainly not enough to be troublesome. Toner save mode printing is pretty light but still easy to read. I printed some full page pictures, which turned out pretty well. Pages do come out slightly curled, but not enough to bother me at all.
Scanning: Exceeded my expectations. I have not had the problems other reviewers mentioned about scan quality. I scanned in some 4 x 6 pics and blew them up to full screen on my 21 inch monitor, the quality was good. At 4 x 6 size they look perfect, and at roughly 4x magnification the quality is still acceptable (some pixellation visible as well as some flaws in the original). Most of my scanning needs are documents, and this printer handles that quickly and flawlessly. I love being able to scan multiple pages using the document feeder.
Copying: works perfectly, really simple with the document feeder.
Document feeder: works perfectly for copying or scanning.
Toner: I can't comment as I have not used the printer enough.
Overall this is an excellent all-in-one that does each of it's jobs very well. I bought this for home use as a replacement for an old ink jet printer, and I love it. For me, it is incredibly handy to be able to scan or copy any document right from home. Also having the speed and relatively low cost of each page makes me more likely to print things out, which makes my life easier.
